Following on from the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family that took place in Rome in October, there was a special invitation from the bishops to reflect on marriage and family life.
Ahead of the forthcoming Ordinary Synod on the Family in October 2015, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, asked all in the Church to reflect with ‘true spiritual discernment’ on the themes relating to marriage and family life that emerged from the Extraordinary meeting of Bishops held in Rome in October 2014.
There was an open parish meeting to discuss this held on Wednesday 13th May 2015. The first Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family took place in Rome from 5-19 October 2014 and was attended by the President of our Bishops’ Conference, Cardinal Vincent Nichols.
The Ordinary Synod which started on 4th October 2015 has the title ‘The Vocation and the Mission of the Family in the Church and in the Contemporary World’.
The Bishops of England and Wales, through two documents, asked all to reflect on the importance of marriage and the role of the clergy in accompanying of people on their journey of marriage and as families.
One document, ‘The Call, the Journey and the Mission – An Invitation from the Bishops of England and Wales to Reflect on the Gift of Marriage and Family Life’, is addressed to the laity and is available as a .pdf file here.
